Preparing for a Shed Slab in Ballarat

A concrete base for a shed — whether it's a garden shed foundation, a storage shed slab or a larger workshop pad — is only as good as the preparation underneath it. Understanding what's involved, and what a concreter needs to know, helps you get an accurate quote and avoids surprises on the day.

What site preparation involves

Clearing the area

The slab area needs to be clear of grass, plants, rubbish and debris. If there is an existing structure or concrete, that needs to come out first. If you haven't cleared the site yet, mention it when you request a quote — it may affect the price.

Levelling and compaction

The ground beneath the slab needs to be relatively flat and well compacted. If the area is sloped, soft, sandy or boggy, the concreter may need to bring in fill, cut the ground down, or do additional compaction work before pouring.

Sub-base material

In many cases a layer of compacted gravel or crushed rock is laid under the concrete. This improves drainage and provides a stable base. Whether this is needed — and how much — depends on your soil type and conditions.

Formwork

Timber or steel boards are used to frame the edges of the slab to the correct dimensions and level. This is usually done by the concreter as part of the job.

Reinforcement

Steel mesh or reo bar is laid inside the form before the concrete is poured. This gives the slab tensile strength and helps prevent cracking over time.

Ground conditions around Ballarat

Ballarat has a mix of soil types. Some areas have clay-heavy soil that can be reactive — it moves with moisture changes. Sandy or soft soil in other areas may need more compaction. Rocky ground in parts of the region can make excavation harder.

We know what's common in different suburbs across Ballarat. That's why including your suburb — and photos of the site — is helpful when requesting a quote.

What to include in your quote request

  • Approximate slab length and width in metres
  • Your suburb
  • What the slab is for
  • Whether the ground is flat, sloped, muddy, cleared or unprepared
  • Whether there is easy vehicle access from the driveway, street or gate
  • A photo of the slab placement area — standing back so the full area is visible
  • A photo of the access path from the street, driveway or gate

Access matters more than people expect

Concrete trucks are large vehicles. If the truck can't get close to the pour site, concrete may need to be wheelbarrowed in — which adds time and labour. Narrow gates, soft ground, overhanging trees or no driveway access all affect how the job is done.

A photo of the access path — from the street or driveway to where the slab will go — is one of the most useful things you can include in a quote request. For more on this, see our guide on concrete truck and backyard access for shed slabs.
